What is Reiki?

Reiki is a complementary treatment that helps restore balance energy to a person's life force. Originally developed in Japan, the name reiki is created by two Japanese symbols (rei) meaning "universal life" and (ki) meaning energy. Reiki is designed to enhance the flow of this life energy, as when it becomes blocked or weakened, it can manifest in physical and emotional symptoms. While reiki is rooted in a spiritual practice, it is not associated with any religion.

Often, after people receive a reiki treatment they report feeling more relaxed, have better sleep, and notice how it supports our body's natural healing process. Sometimes reiki is also used for pain management. While everyone's experience is different, it should promote stress reduction and provide deep relaxation. You do not need to believe in the treatment for it to work - you just need to be open to receiving.

In a typical reiki session, your practitioner will check in before the session about what you are wanting to focusing on within the session. Unlike massage you remain full clothed through the session and can choose whether or not light touch will be used or you can indicate if you prefer not to be touched, and the practitioner will keep their hands hovering over your body.

My Reiki Story . . .

Initially, Priscilla stumbled upon reiki while living in Charlotte, NC, learning how it had helped friends of hers heal from various concerns. At this time, Priscilla was working in community mental health and on a healing journey herself, she started to utilize regular reiki treatments as part of her self-care practice. Thankfully, there was a well-established, trusting, relationship built with this practitioner, as several years later, reiki is what helped her heal from exposure to a narcissistic encounter that left her feeling drained and exhausted much of the time. This practitioner helped to identify the root cause of the energy that was depleted from Priscilla and worked closely with Priscilla until it resolved.

After significant life changes took place, Priscilla was uprooted from her community, experienced a significant loss, and settled into a new job, where she was reintroduced to reiki. She built a relationship with a new practitioner who she worked with for a while and finally decided to take reiki 1 training in 2017 where she learned from Barb Davis (Turning Point). She took somewhat of a detour from this healing modality knowing that at some point she would return. . .

During her yoga teacher training (2024) she signed up for a Yin class with Indigo Wellness and little did she know she would meet a reiki practitioner that she would begin to work with and learn from. In the fall of 2024 Priscilla received her reiki 1 & 2 training from Alex Phillips (Indigo Wellness) and is interested in facilitating reiki sessions for others as she knows how beneficial it has been from healing throughout transitional periods of her life. She continues to receive reiki on a regular basis and is looking forward to continuing her reiki training in the future.
